Course Overview:
ATELIER TRAINING IN FALMOUTH
I offer a variety of art courses for both professional and aspiring artists in the traditional atelier method. During your time as a student you will work exclusively from life in a studio setting. I look to give my students a very strong understanding of the craft side of drawing and painting, so that they have a solid foundation to develop their own style and practice.
Located in Falmouth, my studio is dedicated to passing on the timeless techniques of drawing and painting that I studied during my art education. I foster a supportive environment aimed at mentoring students to enhance their artistic skills and provide a solid foundation so that they can go out and achieve what they want to achieve artistically. No prior art experience is needed and I am very happy to teach new students who are looking to get into drawing and painting as a hobby.
To ensure personalised attention and a tailored learning experience, each class is limited to a maximum of 3 students.
Course Structure:
Class Times:
Morning Session: 9:30am - 12:30pm
Afternoon Session: 1:30pm - 4:30pm
Monday-Saturday
Evening Classes:
6:30pm - 9:15pm, Monday-Wednesday
Students are expected to attend the same classes each week for the 10-week duration. So for example if you wanted to study the introductory course on Monday evenings you would attend the same class for 10 Mondays in a row. However, I offer flexibility to accommodate your schedule if you need to miss a session or prefer a more condensed timeframe.
For more information or to sign up, please use the contact form or email: johntyrobinsonart@gmail.com. Please enquire about the next terms timetable on a contact us form, I will try my best to accommodate your wishes with my availability. The nice thing about the atelier style of learning is that I am able to run multiple classes in the same space. (Apart from Landscape for obvious reasons)
I recommend that all new students begin with the Introductory Course in drawing/painting. This course can be combined with Cast Drawing, Still Life, or Landscape courses if studying multiple modules per week. Additionally, you may choose to repeat the same module multiple times weekly, as half a day's painting passes quickly. If you would like to study multiple days per week then get in contact and we can create a custom timetable based on your goals.
Prices:
£410 one module per week (for a 10 week term)
£790 two modules per week (for a 10 week term)
£1140 three modules per week (for a 10 week term)
£1440 four modules per week (for a 10 week term)
Materials:
I provide materials for the charcoal stage of the course but unfortunately, I do not provide materials for the oil painting stage. However, I can help to assemble a starter painting kit that will be cheaper and more useful than kits from well-known brands.
I also have lots of experience with making my own canvasses, oil mediums and painting surfaces and am very happy to teach my students about this.
Introductory Course
Course Content:
The Introductory course comprises of 20 sessions split into two parts, the introductory course and the advanced introductory course. Each part spans 10 weeks, with the term divided into 5 weeks of charcoal followed by 5 weeks of oil painting.
Students will receive thorough, step-by-step instruction, complemented by individualised critiques and demonstrations from the tutor.
Introductory Course: This segment provides students with a comprehensive overview of comparative measurement, line drawing, mass drawing and oil painting. Over the course, students learn the fundamental principles of drawing and painting. Starting with quick exercises in charcoal, students gradually progress to longer and more rendered drawings. In week 5, they transition to oil painting, beginning with monochrome paintings and slowly add more colour!
Advanced Introductory Course: In this segment, students are introduced to new concepts such as edges, composition, and colour theory, enabling them to build upon the knowledge they learnt in part one. They will refine their drafting skills in preparation for future artworks and will start to undertake longer drawing and painting projects from more complex casts and still-life setups.
Still Life
Course Content
Still life painting is a great means by which to explore and develop the fundamentals of drawing and painting.
If you are looking to learn more about colour theory then I really recommend taking this module. Every surface reacts to light in a different way and this is a great way to explore your palette and understanding of light.
During this course we will also focus on composition, rhythm, edges and other painting techniques such as glazing and scumbling.
Landscape
In the landscape course, I take students out into Falmouth and the surrounding areas and teach them the key stages of painting a landscape in oils. You will learn about composition, colour relationships and colour harmony.
Also, you will learn about the practical elements of painting outside, such as having an efficient setup and how to work with ever-changing weather and light conditions.
I also give regular critiques and demonstrations. In case of wet weather, we go into my studio and can carry on developing their paintings indoors or do some still-life painting.
